It was supposed to rain today, but it never did. Instead, it was a beautiful, sunny day. I decided to take the trail behind St. Jude's and see if the creek had any tadpole potential. Alas, even though it hasn't rained since Friday, the water was still moving too fast and hard for tadpoles. I really miss those big puddles in the old oil fields that used to fill up with tadpoles. There are big houses on that land now.
I walked around the hills for a bit. It was slow going. The grass and weeds are up past my knees. Makes it hard to see the gopher holes. I had to step carefully. But it was nice just to be out there.
Snails at rest
Even though this trail is just a few miles from my house, they have these very attractive, stripey snails that are different from the species that infests my yard at home. And where my garden snails usually seek refuge from the light of day by hiding under something at ground level, these guys often cling to the stems of the tall weeds and grasses.
I found this decollette snail sleeping in a little dry gully.

Some weeks ago, I don't remember when, I came across a Painted Lady caterpillar at school. I brought it home and it lived a quiet, almost forgotten life in a jar on my front porch. I did check on it, though, and was able to get a few before and after pics:
